August 2012 Birthday and Summer Outing

An absolutely wonderful day.

The weather had us worried when it poured down around 11:00 o’clock. But the sun shone brilliantly for the afternoon. We arrived just as the Artilliery (It was also their Drill Day) were having their break. Our group was able to meet up with friends, family, volunteers and re-enactors on the terrace and made good use of the café. The re-enactors resumed their drill. Our intrepid chairman who was deep in conversation (and with his back to the parade ground) was given rather a jolt as the cannon was fired. He may not have heard the command to fire but certainly heard and felt the result. As a birthday favour Ashley, too, was able to fire one of the two cannons that were being used that day. Drill over Ashley was presented with his cake (produced by the café). The decoration was his name with the ‘happy human’ H. The unit whisked him off his feet for 19 bumps. All at Fort Amherst did us proud. It was a great Summer Social Day for one and all.
